The ROM3 Catalyst Developed by Dr. Kenneth Johnson
Musculoskeletal complaints are the primary reason for visits to the doctor's office. Current estimates note 130 million visits annually in the United States. Across the world, these conditions remain the most common etiology of severe pain and long-term physical disability. Injuries in sport and more physical vocational and avocational activities are inherently an outcome of participation. This fact persists despite significant advances in the established benefits of range of motion (ROM), strengthening, and conditioning.
The ROM3 Catalyst LE and ROM3 Catalyst UE and is fashioned to allow for safer, more immediate rehabilitation following a joint injury and/or surgery, and the necessary maintenance of joint precautions to avoid potential dislocation in Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) patients.
Rehabilitation encompasses four goals:
1) Pain reduction
2) Range of Motion (ROM)
3) Strengthening, and
4) Conditioning.
An individual can utilize a cycle ergometer to continue conditioning of the unaffected limb and cardiovascular system, as opposed to the CPM (Continuous Passive Motion) machine which is used in bed. Concurrently, the unaffected limb assists in PROM and AAROM, which is necessary prior to advancement to AROM and further strengthening and conditioning activities.
The additional beauty of the ROM3 Catalyst LE and ROM3 Catalyst UE includes the multiplicity of pedal adjustments for the desired ROM and functionally specific goals. For example, PROM can be better accomplished by placement of the pedal for the affected limb at 90° posterior or trailing the unaffected limb. Simulation of a closed-chain sit-to-stand maneuver can be accomplished with placement of the pedals at 0° in the same plane.
The order and goals of rehabilitation do not change.
Persistent research and development for safe, yet rapid advancement through the process - 1) pain reduction, 2) ROM, 3) strengthening, and 4) conditioning - ensures faster return to routine activities of daily living, work, and even sports. Accordingly, the expectation is for a reduced financial, physical, and mental expense.
